Introduction to Phonetics and Phonology

 Introduction to Phonetics and Phonology

Introduction: Hello everyone and welcome to the first class in this course. In today's lesson we will take a moment to get to know each other better and complete some group activities that will help us explore some key concepts in English phonetics and phonology.

Task 1: Warm Up
Take a moment to get to know your partners. One of you should share your screen. Then you can click the wheel to spin it. Each person can take turns answering a question before spinning the wheel again. Be sure to ask follow up questions based on the information your partners provide.

Task 2: Group Discussion
Take seven minutes to discuss these questions with your partners regarding the topic of this course. Click play on the timer to keep track of your five minutes and allow everyone an equal opportunity to speak.
  • What do you already know about the formal sound system of English?
  • Are you familiar with any technical terminology related to English pronunciation?
  • What activities did your previous teachers (at ULACIT or other contexts) use to teach you aspects of English presentation?
  • What do you know about the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA)? Are you familiar with any of its symbols? If so, which ones?

Task 3: Exploring Key Concepts
Click on your assigned group link below and open the worksheet. Read the instructions and complete the tasks with your partners.
