Arguments and Quarrels 


Instructions: In today's class we are talking about reasons why people have arguments and differences in the ways that men and women argue. Follow your teacher's instructions to complete the different tasks during the class. 

Task 1: Pair Discussion - To begin your focus on this topic, discuss the following questions with your partners. You have exactly 7 minutes so click play on the video to keep track of time and to be sure that everyone has the chance to express their ideas. 


  • What are some common arguments between 
    • Siblings (brothers and sisters)
    • Teenagers and their parents
    • Roommates
    • University classmates working on a group project
    • A newly married couple
    • A couple that has been married for 40 years
  • Some people like to argue. Why do you think that is? Are you one of those people?
  • Who do you think is better at arguing, men or women? Why?
  • Do you think that men and women use different strategies to argue?
  • What are some strategies to resolve an argument?



Task 2: Reading Tasks - Work with your partner to read an article about the differences in the ways that men and women argue. After you read the text, you have several activities to complete. Your teacher assigned you a group number. Click your link below and begin working on your document. 


Task 3: Listening Tasks - Look at the photos below and answer the questions below them.

  • Who are the people in the photos and what is their relationship?
  • What do you think they are arguing about?
Now press play on the video to listen to the two arguments. Summarize the arguments in your own words. Were your initial ideas correct? What other details did you learn?


Now listen to the conversations again and try to complete the sentences below with the following phrases: may have, might have, must have, couldn't have, or should have

Task 5: Analysis of Cases - You will work with your partners to read two situations the caused an argument. After you read the cases, think of some sentences that you think the people said during the argument. Try to include examples of "may have", "must have", "might have", "could have", and "should have" + past participle
