  English V - Week 9 - Ancient Leaders




Introduction: In today's class we will finish Chapter 10 by learning about a groundbreaking leader from the past. Then we will start Chapter 11 on the topic of knowledge and learning by exploring our past experiences in school and describing ways to make schools more innovative. 






Warm UpModern Hieroglyphs
Click the group link below and follow the teacher's instructions to create your own hieroglyphic message.
  • "Read" your partners' hieroglyphs and make interpretations.
  • Then your partners will reveal their true meanings.






Task 1Group Discussion
Click play on the video timer and discuss the following questions with your partners. When you finish, click the link to play the "build a pyramid" game.


  • What images come to your mind when you read the phrase "ancient egypt"?
  • What do you know about how ancient Egyptian people lived and their customs?
  • Nobody knows for sure exactly how the pyramids were built. What theories have you heard? What do you believe is a possible explanation?
  • The pyramids still exist after thousands of years. What parts of our modern civilization do you think will be discovered by future humans? What will they think about them?
    • Build a Pyramid: CLICK HERE to play an educational game with your partners. You will have the task of building a pyramid for the pharaoh but you have to make strategic decisions if you want to be successful. When you finish, you will receive a score. You will compare your score with the other groups to see who built the best pyramid.

Your will hear your teacher give a brief presentation. CLICK HERE to complete the quiz with the important information you hear. 


  • Reading Time: Go to pages 122-123 in your book and complete the following exercises with your partners.
    • Complete Exercise 2
    • Read the article and complete Exercises 3 and 4.






  • Group Discussion: Discuss these questions with your classmates and teacher.
    • What words would you use to describe Hatshepshut's character and personality?
    • Why do you think she decided to break with tradition and become the king?
    • She never lied about being a woman but she wanted her public image to have male characteristics. Why do you think she did this?
    • When is a time in your life that you broke with tradition or decided to do things your own way?








Task 3Preparation for Performance 2
For your second performance next week you will prepare and deliver a 10-15 minute group presentation on an important woman from history. CLICK HERE to view the rubric. 

  • Learning Objective: Demonstrate your ability to speak clearly and effectively by presenting an engaging 10-15 minute oral presentation and leading the audience through a 5-7 minute guided discussion activity.
    • Engaging introduction and conclusion that emphasize the importance of the person.
    • Summary of important personal and professional information about the person.
    •  A graphic organizer or audience response task.
    • 3-5 discussion and reflection questions for the audience.
Take 15 minutes to do the following:
  • Exchange contact information
  • Think of possible subjects for your presentation
  • Create a plan to finish the presentation, response task, and discussion questions before next week







Task 4: Previewing Unit 11
Discuss the following questions with your partners. 
  • What is your earliest memory of school? 
  • Describe a teacher from elementary school, high school, or college who is memorable to you in a good way. What can you say about this person?
  • Describe a teacher who is memorable to you in a bad way. Why do you have negative associations with them?
  • In what ways do you think the teaching-learning process in educational institutions has changed since you were a child? What about since your parents' generation?
  • Do you think that the average student experience in high school and college in Costa Rica adequately prepares the student for personal and professional success?
